Program Description

Life Change Academy, founded in 2006, is a mentoring program using the medium of ballroom dance for students in at-risk schools across Oklahoma City’s metro area. Through the allure of ballroom, our trained, professional dance instructors and volunteers have a unique opportunity to quickly instill essential social and coping skills many of our students may be missing as they grow into adolescence. While learning the cha-cha, they also learn etiquette, mutual respect, confidence, goal setting, teamwork and the value of hard work. We are raising the expectations of our children. The mission statement our students repeat every time they are together resonates the desire “To do more, be more and have more, so they can give more.”

In-School Program

Our in-school program sends a male and female dance instructor into the classroom twice a week to work with up to 40 students per class. In addition, we find our students begin practicing on their own at recess and after school. It gives the students something positive to look forward to. The students all begin working together as a team to make it to the “finals” to compete in our end-of-year competition event.

There are 96 students from the top 8 schools that will compete for the title of Life Change Ballroom Dance Champions. It will be held on December 10, 2015 at Rose State Performing Arts Theatre, and we certainly expect another full capacity crowd of nearly 1,400 people.

Youth Empowerment & Leadership Program

We have grown our program to include a Youth Empowerment & Leadership Program (YELP). Going into our 9th year, we have successfully provided a free leadership & mentoring program (disguised as ballroom dancing) for at-risk students in the Britton, Western Village & North Highland neighborhoods.
